Mook Lion

My name on my identification document is Daniel Chapman but I am commonly known as Mook Lion. I was born in Johannesburg but I have spent the majority of my life living in Durban. I am currently studying Masters in fine art at the Durban University of Technology. I am investigating street art and mural art as examples of social activism with the use of
Durban as a case study from 2012 to 2015. My study is practice-led with the aim of producing site specific and socially conscious artwork in the public domain. The theoretical research and primary information gathered through interviews with members of the public, informs my art practice. My artistic direction is informed by my involvement in graffiti for the past ten years
as well as my training in fine art. I am also inspired by my travels around Southern Africa and Europe, where I was exposed to the various and unique cultures of street art, mural art and graffiti. I enjoy working collaboratively with experienced artists and community members.
Involving communities in an artwork results in a sense of ownership and participation, which means a deeper sense of appreciation for the artwork is developed. My main goal is to make art which has a positive impact on society by beautifying or re-purposing wasted space and
communicating with the public.
